How To Clean An Electric Kettle

Home » How To Clean An Electric Kettle

Mineral deposits from water, also known as limescale, can accumulate over time, impacting your kettle’s performance and the taste of your tea. If your water is hard, it’s like a clarion call for more frequent cleaning. If you find your kettle taking longer to boil or the water tasting off, it’s time to roll up your sleeves.

Electric Kettle Cleaning Agents

Natural cleaners are your kettle’s best friends. Here’s a quick list:

  • Vinegar: The acid cuts through limescale effectively.
  • Lemon Juice: A gentler acid, perfect for light build-up and a fresh scent.
  • Baking Soda: Great for stubborn spots when used as a paste.
  • Descale Solution: Makes quick work of even the toughest stains and buildup.

Descale Solution

  • Follow the Manufacturer’s Instructions:
    • Commercial descalers will have specific instructions. Typically, you’ll mix a certain amount of descaler with water and fill the kettle.
  • Boil and Soak:
    • Bring the solution to a boil and then turn off the kettle, allowing it to soak for the time specified by the descaler’s instructions.
  • Scrub if Necessary:
    • Some descalers will lift the limescale off without the need for scrubbing, but check for any residue and scrub it off if it’s there.
  • Rinse Well:
    • It’s crucial to rinse the kettle thoroughly after using a descaling solution to ensure no chemicals remain.

White Vinegar

Distilled white vinegar is one of the safest and effective methods of descaling an electric kettle because it will literally remove the mineral deposits from the surface of the kettle.

Steps For Descaling:

  • Fill the kettle with a 50/50 mix of distilled white vinegar & filtered water
  • Boil the kettle
  • Let it sit for 30 minutes then pour it out
  • Use a sponge or Brillo pad (only use if kettle is stainless steel) to remove excess minerals

Lemon Juice / Citric Acid

Lemons, limes, or even orange juice are all highly acidic and perfect for descaling in this application. Lemon juice is our favorite of the choices, but if you have one and not the other, you can give this a try.

Steps For Descaling:

  • Fill the kettle with filtered water
  • Boil
  • Add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • Stir / swirl around to mix
  • Let it sit for 30 minutes then pour it out
  • Use a sponge to remove excess minerals

Baking Soda

  • Create a Paste (for spot cleaning):
    • If there are specific areas with limescale, make a paste using baking soda and a little water, apply it to the areas, and let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing gently.
  • Boil Baking Soda Solution (for overall descaling):
    • For full-kettle cleaning, add 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda to water in the kettle.
  • Heat:
    • Turn on the kettle and bring the baking soda solution to a boil.
  • Soak and Scrub:
    • Turn off the kettle and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then, if needed, scrub gently.
  • Rinse:
    • Rinse the kettle several times with water until the rinse water is clear and free of any baking soda residue.

Cleaning an Electric Tea Kettle

Regular cleaning and descaling of your electric kettle are not just about maintaining its shiny exterior but are crucial for its performance and the taste of your beverages. Whether you opt for a natural home remedy like vinegar or lemon juice, a household staple like baking soda, or a commercial descaling solution, the key is consistency and thoroughness.
